Wondercon was 2/3 weeks ago and i have yet to say a single word about my Wondercon experience...has it been laziness, fear, or something more dreadful that has kept my Wondercon experience under wraps? Dare i say it was something more dreadful!!! In fact it was the dreaded CON FLU!!! Yep you heard it here first after being flu free for a year CON FLU came and kicked my ass. The CON FLU was sneaky it took a couple of days for it to kick in and completely dominate my life. For 7 days of misery i took vitamins, medicine, cough drops, sleep, tissues and everything else required to defeat the stupid beast known as CON FLU which kept me from doing just about anything. Yet victory came and i fell the beast known as CON FLU!!!
Now some words on Wondercon. The work up to the show almost buried me in a blanket of fatigue (really need to learn how to budget my time better!) I wrapped up DUST #3 for Semantink Publishing (find the comic here
[link] ) leaving me less then a week to finish up my prints and 2012 art book. With much strain and a slight eye twitch i managed to get done what needed to be done for the show and waded through the worst parking experience of my con going life to exhibit at what was a lively, bright show. I got to see many friends some of which i haven't seen and or talked to in years including a cousin of mine who i didn't even know was into comics!!! Got to hang with the Inky Ballz crew (James your crazy i hope the cat lady liked the Zombie card), had a great sit down with Semantinks publisher Ben Glibert (Love the Dust prints). I even had the good fortune to witness my good friend AJ Herreras' success as his Forbidden Panel booth at Wondercon was constantly busy flush with old and new fans devouring all that Forbidden Panel
[link] had to offer!!!
The highlight of Wondercon came at an unexpected time as i was sitting behind my booth doing the math learning that financially the show wasn't turning out to be the greatest and with a wedding in my future and fatigue riding me like a two dollar whore on Valentines day worry/fear was slowly invading my confidence and then Rich rolled up with his Green Lantern hat, wheelchair and good humor. And we started to talk, to have a real conversation about comics, about being an artist and being a fan. This was the highlight of the show for me. Rich was having a good time, he seemed happy to be at the show a true fan, not a looky lou, not a autograph hound, not someone looking to see a preview of the next big TV show a fan that enjoys the medium for the mediums sake who sees comics as art and entertainment. Our conversation reminded me why i do this, it allowed me to pull my head out of the grind and just enjoy the simple fact that i get to make funny books and not to give up. Which is huge because this business of comics can be at times brutal and discouraging, and to meet someone, a fan of this industry that doesn't care about all the bs that goes into the making of was refreshing. And i know that Rich isn't the only fan of comics out there that sees things the way he does but Rich was there at the right place and right time to pull me out of the muck Thanks Rich!!!
There were many other great things about the show i had two sets of neighbors that were awesome company to have, i picked up a Stan Sakia sketchbook and other goodies, even had a chance to talk with Ted Mckeever and if you don't know who he is you need to check out his new book MONDO coming out through Image comics its the awesome sauce!!! All in all despite the tired, bad parking and contracting the con flu the good of WonderCon Anaheim outweighed the bad and i cant wait till next year!!!
